Penis cutting, another speciality of Thailand!

Sitting in his office at Paolo Memorial Hospital in Bangkok, Surasak Muangsombot, a surgeon, recalls having his first penis transplanted in 1978 and quickly discovering that the horrific mutilations were one of the forms of domestic violence in Thailand. Since 1978, Dr. Surasak’s team alone has operated on 33 men. In the same period, “only” three cases were recorded in Sweden. Two in the United States – including the highly publicized one of John Bobbitt, who, after having regained all his abilities thanks to surgery, had become an actor in pornographic films – and one in Australia. “Some years there are four or five (in Thailand) and then you don’t hear about it,” says Dr Surasak, “but sometimes it’s like an epidemic”. Phallo-plasticians have a lot to do, because jealous women, once the penis has been cut off, often go after the unfortunate organ. “Some boil it, feed it to the ducks, flush it down the toilet and flush it, bury it or even tie it to a balloon and let it fly away,” says the surgeon. The most delicate case for him was that of this woman who for a long time refused to admit that she had sent her husband’s virile member to a septic tank. “I asked the nurse to clean it well and warned the patient that he might have sepsis,” explains the doctor. He replied: “listen, do your best, and if I have sepsis, at least I will die with my penis”. “Fifteen hours passed between the time the penis was sliced and grafted, which is far longer than anything the books say, but I did it, and to my amazement everything went well. “, explains the surgeon
